Learn More About New Plymouth's Most Qualified Pilot - Jim Finlayson 

Jim is a specialist flying instructor, Flight Examiner, and CRM instructor. He served 21 years in the RNZAF and has now spent 12 years in General Aviation. In the RNZAF Jim flew CT4B Airtrainers, BAC167 Strikemasters, and A4K Skyhawks, then changed to helicopters initially on the Bell 47 Sioux, then the UH-1H Iroquois. In 1991 Jim completed a flying instructors course and instructed on CT4's and Airtourers, followed by a helicopter instructors course and instruction duties at the Central Flying School on Bell 47's and Airtourers. Jim returned to No 3 Squadron as an instructor on the Iroquois, flying primarily in the South Island of New Zealand. As well as his flying experience, Jim served operational tours in Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, and Bougainville. He was made a Member of the British Empire for his services in Sarajevo in 1992/1993. 


Since leaving the RNZAF, Jim has flown numerous helicopter types including BK117 & EC145, AS350, R44, R22, Bell 47, Bell 206, Bell 212, Bell 412, EC135, andAW139. Jim has also flown throughout New Zealand and Australia, Antarctica, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, PNG, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Vanuatu. Jim holds numerous qualifications applicable to flying and CRM instruction, including:

  • NZ: ATPL (H), CPL (A), 'A' Cat instructor (H), 'C' Cat instructor (A), Command Instrument Ratings 'H' & 'A', GA and Airline Flight Examiner
  • Australia: ATPL (H), CPL (A), Grade 1 instructor (H), Grade 3 instructor (A), Command Instrument Ratings 'H' & 'A', ATO

When Jim Is Not Flying He’s...

When not involved in aviation activities, Jim enjoys spending time with his family in New Plymouth, as well as rock climbing, snow skiing, tramping, mountaineering, kayaking, plus a bit of Latin dancing! Jim and Alina also look after foster children and a lifestyle block, so life’s always busy!
